Our Story

Once upon a time…
There was a small team of geeky, regular folks who loved building technology and helping people….
The name Otis? No grand story there… it's our founder's middle name, and his grandfather's before that. And Ed? That was originally shorthand for “Educational Systems,” which were historically at the heart of our work (it also happens to be our founder's first name). Humble, unassuming, approachable. That felt right for a team of self-described regular folk who love data, tech, and digging in to solve problems.
That team got started in 2000, building tools to help education agencies make better use of their data, and within the first few years had already delivered statewide report cards and early mobile applications at a time when that was pretty novel. Through the 2000s and into the 2010s, OtisEd kept growing, taking on more states and districts and quietly becoming go-to infrastructure for K–12 data systems across the country. Along the way, the team built out a whole suite of homegrown tools — Zipline, Synergyz, Nimble Analytics — each one solving a real problem they kept seeing in the field.
In 2020, OtisEd joined the AnLar Group, moved everything to the cloud, and kept on going. New partners, new challenges, new solutions! Twenty-five-plus years in, the work is still what gets us up in the morning.
A quarter century later, we took a fresh look at our identity as a company/community. In a spark of inspiration, Otis became a dog and Ed his human pal. A team of problem solvers having fun trying to make the world a bit better than they found it…
